Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp yeast
  • 5-6 cups sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 eggs
  • ½ cups oil
  • water

Steps

  1. Mix flour, sugar (minus 1 Tbsp), and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Make a well in the flour mixture.
  3. Mix yeast and 1 Tbsp sugar in the well.
  4. Add ⅓ cup warm water and use a fork to mix into a paste.
  5. Cover and let sit for 10 min.
  6. Mix oil and three eggs into the well.
  7. Knead dough until non-sticky but not too dry.
  8. Let rise 1-2 hours covered.
  9. Punch down dough and let rise again 1-2 hours.
  10. Punch down, separate into two sections.
  11. Separate each section into three pieces.
  12. Roll out the pieces into snakes and braid.
  13. Put loaves on a lightly greased pan, cover, and let rise 1 hour.
  14. Brush gently with egg yolk of remaining egg.
  15. Sprinkle on any desired toppings.
  16. Cook for 30 minutes at 300 F.
